R22 Legislation and planning ahead
- The production of R22 air conditioning equipment, including spare parts, has ceased.
- The production of new R22 refrigerant ceased last year, and all stocks of new R22 were destroyed before January 1st 2010.
- Only recycled R22 can be stocked or sold from now on.
- The demand for R22 already exceeds supply as only some ten percent of annual demand is being recycled at this time.
- The price of recycled R22 is steadily rising.
- The stock piling of R22 on site is illegal.
- Existing R22 installations must be monitored and have monthly condition checks.
- Finally, there are some new R22 replacement refrigerants available at this time (‘drop-ins’), but stocks are limited, and results are anything but conclusive. Taking a chance with small units may be acceptable, but taking such a chance with the main source of cooling for large buildings (large chillers) is a far greater risk.
- Government ECA (enhanced capital allowance) incentives enable you to offset the entire cost of replacement in the first year as long as the chillers qualify under the efficiency rating system (EER), AT THIS TIME.
